We are happy to announce our new PRKS Steward, Gene Kern! Gene has many years of racing under his belt and has been involved with the SCCA since 1985. He started out racing with SCCA in the Misery Bay Region Solos. Gene’s interest in working in racing industry started when he and his wife would attend AutoCross events in Erie, PA. While attending Pro Races at Mid-Ohio, his wife inquired about the corner workers and eventually they both began working in timing and scoring at various events. Around 2000 Gene was accepted into the SCCA Steward in Training program and learned to be an SCCA steward. Gene has worked as all positions including Pit and Grid at Pro Racing events at Mid-Ohio and the Cleveland Grand Prix.
Now Gene joins us as a steward for the PRKS and is excited to join the team. He notes “It’s great to see the younger kids instructing and the positive attitudes that come from this type of competition”. When asked his favorite part about racing, he explained that performance driving and stewarding were at the top. However, he jokes that his least favorite part about racing is hearing the protests as a steward.
Gene attended the University of Detroit for Mechanical Engineering. He later served in the Air force and when he returned his career led him into computer software engineering. He’s enjoyed many cars in his lifetime, like an Opel Gt, Triumph Spitfire, and various BMWs. Gene now has a Miata, that he drove last week at Track Night in America at our track. We are glad to welcome Gene to our team and anticipate the impact he will have on our Pitt Race Karting Series!
